Eyelids / Blepharoplasty

As we get older, bags, dark circles and wrinkles appear around the eyes, making the face look permanently tired. Excess skin or drooping eyelids can also affect vision. Cosmetic surgery can be carried out to lift the area directly above the eye and make a tired or sad face look younger.

Lower eyelid and upper eyelid surgeries are different interventions.
Blepharoplasties take about an hour. They are generally performed under local anesthesia, possibly under sedation.

Upper eyelids

• Procedure

Excess skin (and possible excess fat or orbicular muscles) is removed through incisions made along the natural skin lines of the upper eyelids, which will make scars barely visible.

Lower eyelids
Bags under the eyes are caused by excess fat and sometimes by fluid accumulation, which may vary in the course of the day.

• Procedure

Excess fat under the eyelids is removed through a small incision below the lashes. If necessary, excess skin may be removed as well, as is the case for upper eyelids. Your surgeon may also retighten the orbicular eye muscle.
Sometimes, the incision will be made from the inside surface of the lower eyelid (transconjunctival blepharoplasty), which will make the scar completely invisible.
More and more frequently, you surgeon will also reposition the fat along the eye ball instead of removing it. This technique will avoid hollow eye effect, which is common after some blepharoplasties.

• Postoperative care

You will usually be able to go home immediately after the operation.
In order to avoid bruising and swelling, bandages may be applied for a few hours.
Eyelids swell very quickly but they unswell just as fast.
Watery eyes may prevent you from being able to read during the first few days. Cold eye pads, ointment treatments and eye drops will then be prescribed to accelerate your recovery.
Wearing dark glasses during about one week is recommended. They will protect your eyelids from the light and hide bruises and swelling.
The stitches will be removed 4 to 7 days after the operation.
You will also be advised to wait 2 to 3 weeks before doing physical activities.
After the operation, your eyes will definitively seem younger-looking!
